I am so excited about this project. I have been seeing shirts like these for sale for like $50-$80 and thought that was a bit ridiculous. I knew I could create this look myself for much cheaper. My husband went out of town for work and it was the perfect opportunity for me to invite some girlfriends over and have a bleaching party. Cause bleaching is more fun with friends.
I bleached 2 shirts. Both were purchased at goodwill at some point in time for less than $5 each.
What you need:
Flannel
Bleach
String or Rubber Bands
Bucket or Sink
Gather your shirt and tie it off wherever you want. We all tried different lengths. There are really so many different options.
Add bleach and water to your sink or bucket. We decided to use my kitchen sink because it seemed easier and was big enough to fit all of our shirts at one time.
We used the whole bottle of bleach and added water until the sink was about half full. You can choose to dilute as little or as much as you want. The more you dilute your bleach, the longer you will probably need to let your shirt soak.
Soak shirt in bleach water.
Make sure it is submerged in the water. We got creative with some spoons to hold some of our shirts under. We kept all the shirts in for the same amount of time, but we noticed that the color and thickness of the shirts also contributed to the time it took to see results. Again, there are so many options.
I think we soaked these for 2 or 3 hours. After you reach your desired bleach level you rinse the shirts out and remove the string or rubber band. You want to make sure you rinse them out really well so the bleach does not bleed on to other parts of the shirt. Wash them (by themselves) and you are ready to go.
I am so pleased with how they turned out. It was so fun to see how different they all were.
These are my shirts. I LOVE THEM.
(I used a rubber band for the left shirt and string for the right.)
My only regret is that I did not bleach one of Finley's shirts. Can you imagine how cute this will be in toddler size? I also just want to bleach everything now. Bleaching is my new tie-dye.
This was really fun and super simple. And I think it may have cost me $10. Try it and tag us on insta so we can see your #peachycreations.
Did you have any problems with bleach eating away at the shirt and causing holes?
