Project difficulty: Super Easy
Y'all I am so pumped because I finished my first wedding DIY this weekend! We are pretty lucky because the venue we have chosen just has a pretty atmosphere already that we won't needs tons of extra decor but really just some little things to add that special personal touch. I have been to a few vintage markets and the bridal fair and it is no secret that anything for a wedding is super expensive. Since I enjoy being creative (as do my close friends & sisters) I have decided I would like to make some things for our decor. I've got about 7 months to get it all done. I'm trying my best to not wait till the last minute. Kev and I were in Target after Valentine's Day and we stumbled upon these plastic marquee signs in the clearance section.
They were originally 8 bucks a piece but I got them for 50% off. I told Kevin they would definitely look cute on a table somewhere at the wedding. I am so obsessed with this trend of marquee signs but have seen that they can also be expense. (That seems to be a common theme with wedding planning) Since I found these so cheap I couldn't pass them by. I realized after I brought them home that I could probably spray paint them a color to go with the wedding theme.
When I got them home I noticed that I would have to unscrew the entire back to try and see if I could take the light bulbs off to paint them. We had some painters tape lying around so I just covered the lights the best I could in the tape. These guys sat in our dining room for a few months because the weather didn't get warm enough for outside projects until just recently. I was originally going to spray paint them burgundy but when I got to the spray paint aisle, the gold spoke to me!! And I just love everything gold right now.
I was absolutely giddy at the sight of how these turned out with the paint I chose. I am no professional spray painter but I did a pretty decent job. Painting these took me maybe 5 minutes. The next day I took the painters tape off and some of the red was showing around the bulbs and some of the spray paint got on them too. I had some gold acrylic paint in the house so I used that to cover the red and the paint on the bulbs came off easily with nail polish remover! I HAD to see these lit up so I stole some batteries from another device temporarily.
I. Am. Obsessed!!
I love the way the color looks and when its lit up you can't see the imperfections with the paint. The only issue was that the on and off switch isn't working but I think the night of the wedding we can just pop in the batteries and be good to go. Now I have the itch to spray paint all the things!!
This project cost me about $12 bucks total and maybe 15 minutes of my time. These are so cute that if I wanted to have them on display in the house after the wedding they would totally work.
Wedding project #1 down!
Can't wait to start on the next one.
