Project Difficulty: Intermediate
Price: $$
I'm back at it again with the DIY projects, y'all. It must be the extra daylight and warmer weather that is inspiring me to start with my wedding projects but its another week and another one complete. This project I did this weekend is a DIY from the ever so lovely girls at A Beautiful Mess. It is no secret that they are major inspirations for us and when I saw this DIY posted in February, I knew it was something I wanted to try out for wedding decor and then have it live in my house post wedding. All credit goes to them for this project. Check out their post, Hanging Flower Heart DIY, for all the information on how to complete this DIY!!
Okay so I knew this project was an easy one day thing but I was also worried there were parts of it that might be overwhelming. Mostly the choosing of the flowers. (I was right) One of my good friends & fellow ABM lovers, Ryan, sent me a text showing me that she had completed this project! It was so cute and gave me hope that I could get it done too. I ended up going to THREE stores and walking in circles around their floral department before making any purchases. Joann's was the last place I went and probably should have been the first since that's where the project materials were bought in the original post. Ryan advised me to pick one color I was certain on, pick a flower I loved, and then get one's to match from there. I tried to find all big flowers but our choices at Joann's were pretty limited. I knew I wanted pink and that's what I got!
For the flowers (I only got 6 bunches), Styrofoam, and Styrofoam cutter kit, I spent about 48 dollars total. A little pricier (I'm super cheap) but I think worth it in the end and it comes out looking like it's worth that much for sure.
I invited my crafty friend/wedding coordinator, Wonder Woman of a friend, Ginny, over to help and she was kind enough to bring the glue gun. I am so glad she came over because she helped me with some key parts of this project.
I got a couple of sheets of Styrofoam and they weren't as wide as the original post but I figured I could make them work. I hot glued the two together which worked out well. I wasn't sure how to do the heart because I did not trust my free hand. Ginny came up with the idea to print out a heart shape I wanted and then make it into a mini projector with her Iphone to trace. Like, forreal.
How genius is that?! She apparently had used this trick before and it worked out perfect. We tried taping it onto the chair but in the end she held it at the right height and I traced the shape. Since I wanted the heart to be as big as possible we had to trace one side of it in the spare foam.
Once the shape was traced we took it outside and I carved it out. Styrofoam is apparently super messy. I was glad I bought the little kit to cut it too because that was super handy and I was able to shave down the rough edges on the outside. After putting some puzzle pieces together we did a little more hot gluing and got the base done!
Once that was done we pulled the tops of the flowers off which was a pretty simple task. Then we did a test run and laid them out to see how it was going to look before I started gluing. Originally I had the dark at the top and was thinking I was going to have to get more flowers today but after a few minutes of thinking, a re look at the original post, we rearranged them and it worked out even better with the dark flowers on the bottom.
After I was happy with that I started gluing away. At first I was concerned about the glue melting the plastic stems and the flowers not standing up as much but it ended up flattening all of the flowers so it worked out perfectly. I had just enough flowers to cover the entire heart.
I am so happy with how this turned out!! It is going to be so cute somewhere at the wedding and for now it will live in my guest room or dining room because I'm afraid it might get messed up in our attic during the summer. Again, I highly recommend visiting the ABM website and trying this out if you love flowers and hearts. The possibilities for the colors used is endless. If I'm feeling a bit wild, I might even make one more before October.
Another wedding project down! On to the next one!
Life's a Peach,
Tori
